THE CHRONICLE OF THE FAIR
The Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects is held twice a year: in the months of May and November.
The 7th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects was held May 22 on the premises of the St. Petersburg office of the Moscow Industrial Bank.
The 7th Fair presented 48 projects and business ideas from various industries: building, chemicals, tourism, woodworking, food production, fuel and power, shipbuilding, stock farming, information technology.
Among the competitors for investment at the Fair were companies OAO Izhorskiye Zavody, AOZT Rubin, OOO TMPTTs Temp, OOO Golfstream, NPP Tristan, ZAO Kukuruzny Mir Vitek, OAO Kubanenergo, a branch of World Integrated Development, Inc., ZAO TsNII SM, the Northwestern Foundation for Investment Support and New Technology Implementation, etc.
For the first time in the history of the Fair 40 investment projects came from the Gomel-Raton free economic zone, Republic of Belarus.
The Fair was visited by representatives of some 200 Russian and foreign investment companies and foundations, banking institutions, large industrial companies. The Fair was also visited by representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the US-Russia Investment Foundation, the Consulates General of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy.
The agenda of the 7th Fair included a conference on the subject of Protection of Investors’ Rights. The conference had been arranged by company MKD and was attended by representatives of Labrium Consulting Company, AVK Investment Company, the Moscow-based Financial Market Research Center, the Gomel-Raton free economic zone.
The 7th Fair hosted a round table discussion on the subject of the Small and Medium-Sized Business Participation in the Preparation Program for the Tercentennial of St. Petersburg.
The Jury of the Fair selected the best investment projects and business ideas which were then awarded diplomas and prizes. Among the members of the Jury were representatives of the St. Petersburg city government, banking institutions, financial and industrial companies.
The Fair was also the scene of the final round of the contest of students’ and young managers’ business ideas The Young, The Daring, The Promising (YDP). This initiative, aimed at the enhancement of the contacts between businesspersons and the youth of St. Petersburg, was sponsored by BALTONEXIM BANK. Of the 40 business ideas which had been sent in to the first round of the YDP contest in April 2001, 11 were qualified for the final round. At the Fair the finalist contestants presented their ideas before the jury and an audience of investors.
The 7th Fair was co-sponsored by the Moscow Industrial Bank and the Alpha Bank.
The 6th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects under the motto of a Whole Range of Private Initiative was held at 11 Plostchad Ostrovskogo on Oct. 31 .
59 investment projects and business ideas were presented, with the amount of required investment varying from $20 thsd to $100 mln.
Among the participants were companies such as OAO Lenenergo, OAO Alt-Soft, ZAO 1st St. Petersburg Aquapark, ZAO Association Bummash, the St. Petersburg Currency Exchange. Alongside companies from Northwestern Russia, companies from other regions such as OOO Tyumen Interregional Company, Stavropol Kray-based OAO Elektrosvyaz, Moscow-based Resursinvestitsii also presented their investment projects at the Fair.
The Fair hosted a workshop on the subject of How to Draw Private Investment into Production Sphere by Means of Share Capital.
During the Fair the investment and banking company Gamma Group conducted a seminar for investment seekers on the subject of Who Invests in St. Petersburg and How?. The contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising drew universal attention on the part of the participants in, and the visitors of, the Fair. The contest was for the second time sponsored by BALTONEXIM BANK.
More than 300 representatives of Russian and foreign companies, as well as individual entrepreneurs, visited the Fair.
The 6th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects ended with the awarding ceremony. The Jury said the quality of the presentation of projects had improved and the projects were more interesting and feasible than before.
The best project at the Fair was the Fort-Ross company-developed project aimed at setting up an incubator of small business IT companies.
The second award was won by company OOO Kombita-Inform which had presented a project for the construction and exploitation of hotels in wooded areas in the Karelsky Peninsula.
The third award went to company OAO St. Petersburg Subcontracting Center for the project of Monolithic House-building Casing Production.
Besides, the St. Petersburg City Committee for Economy and Industrial Policy gave a special award to company OOO Kombita-Inform: the Committee decided to fund the company’s market research on the presented project.
The Center of Psychology and Speech Therapy took part in both the main exposition and the contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising and won three special awards. Company Energo gave the Center the Award for Caring about the Young Generation. The ITAR-TASS news agency awarded the Center for the Humanity of the Project whereas the radio station Severnaya Stolitsa, the general information sponsor of the Fair, decided to award the Center of Psychology and Speech Therapy with free time on the air to promote the project.
The newspaper Delovoy Peterburg gave an Economic Sensibility Award to the company OAO RKL for the project of the Central Trade and Exhibition Fishing Center.
The winners of the 2000 Contest for the Best Journalist’s Work about Business, which had been conducted for journalists of Northwestern Russia, were also declared at the Fair. The main prize of 30,000 Swedish Kronas was given to Deputy Editor Sergey Ageev of the magazine Expert Severo-Zapad.
The students’ contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising raised interest on the part of many of the guests of the Fair. Some were interested in the contest from the viewpoint of possible participation in the future, others from the viewpoint of the search for new ideas and projects. The main prizewinners of the contest were Nikolai Borodulin, Yuri Chumak, Natalya Zolotukhina. Special awards were given to the project of The Center of Psychology and Speech Therapy, the project of The Kovcheg Hotel for Pets and the Zdorovyak project.
The participants in the contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising said they were pleased to have taken part in the contest. They also said they were willing to take part in the next contest to present their new ideas and projects. At present 11 company participants in the 6th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects are conducting preliminary talks with interested investors.
The events of the 6th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects were given coverage by journalists from 40 media companies, including the city and regional dailies and weeklies, radio stations, TV channels, information agencies.
The 5th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects took place May 18, 2000. The Fair was held at the office of Moscow Industrial Bank located in the newly reconstructed Paskevich Mansion at 8 English Embankment.

The first prize went to the investment and building company ZAO StroiKomplekt for the project of the reconstruction of the communal and dilapidated housing in central St. Petersburg.

The second prize was awarded to ZAO Gorodskoy Tsentr Nedvizhmosti (City Real Estate Center) for the Program for Renovation and Construction of the Garrets and Attics in the Buildings of Historical, Cultural and Art Value
The third prize was given to Soyuz-Avto Consumers’ Society for the project of a Car Hire Purchase Service.
The agenda of the Fair provided, as usual, for a good many various events. For example, a round-table discussion was held on the subject of The Most Interesting Spheres for Investors.
The contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising , sponsored by BALTONEXIM Bank, as an inherent part of the Fair. The jury of the contest examined a great variety of business ideas proposed by St. Petersburg students: from a project of the protection of agricultural crops using super-light aircraft to projects of new bulletproof jackets, advanced refrigeration systems, tailoring, etc. The first prize was awarded to the business idea of production of materials for in-house pipeline rehabilitation. The second prize went to the business idea of an adsorption refrigerator whereas the third prize was awarded to the business idea of an original dancing club.
The 4th Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects was staged at the Anichkov Palace on Nov. 18, 1999. About 60 projects and business ideas in the field of small and medium-sized business were presented at the Fair, the amount of required investment ranging from $40 thsd. to $100 mln. The exhibited projects related to agriculture, building, medicine, consumer services and many other industries.
Summing up the results of the 4th fair, the organizers noted specially that the exhibited projects were of better quality than before; the business plans had been drawn up more thoroughly; the quality of the presentation of the projects had improved..
The 4th Fair was visited by representatives of 250 companies, as well as a large number of journalists and private persons. Serious interest in the Fair was evident on the part of intermediary companies. The most active at the Fair were the following investors: Sberbank, the Russian Bank of Project Financing, the Russian Finance Collegium, OOO Derek Miller Investment Group, The Foreign Trade Institute at the Consulate General of Italy in St. Petersburg, Moscow-based investment company ARQ, Gamma Group, Moscow-based investment company Intvent, Moscow-based Interbank Financial House.
A conference for investors was held on the subject of the Investment Risks Minimization.

Five companies found investors at the 4th Fair. Another five continue talks with interested investors.
The 2nd business contest The Young, The Daring, The Promising was held within the framework of the Fair. The contest was an arena for St. Petersburg students and postgraduates to present their business ideas.
The events of the Fair were covered by 32 media companies, including central, city and local newspapers, radio stations and TV channels.

The 3rd Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects took place May 27, 1999. The general sponsor of the event was company Energo.
The exposition was visited by more than 150 representatives of Russian and foreign companies, as well as individual entrepreneurs. They could probe into 38 investment projects in the sphere of small and medium-sized business which had been sent in from St. Petersburg, Leningrad Oblast, Kaliningrad, Perm, Kyrgyzstan. The required investment totaled $200 mln.
Greeting the participants in the Fair, Governor of St. Petersburg said that it was not by chance that the Fair opened May 27, the Birthday of St. Petersburg, since it is investment which start up the restoration of any city or country, on the whole.
The first award was given to the project of the Kamennogorsk Offset Paper Factory Reconstruction which had been designed by the company Kamennogorskaya Fabrika Ofsetnykh Bumag based in the town of Kamennogorsk, Leningrad Oblast.
The second award went to the project A Complex Program for the Company Stepwise Development designed by St. Petersburg-based company OAO Izotek.
The third award was received by the project of The Tank Farm Reconstruction developed by St. Petersburg-based company ZAO Voskhod.
The winner projects - the Kamennogorsk Offset Paper Reconstruction and the Tank Farm Reconstruction – were sent in for consideration to the Moscow office of the US-Russia Investment Foundation.
The 3rd Fair presented for the first time the business show program The Young, The Daring, The Promising.
The 2nd Fair and Presentation of Investment Projects took place Nov. 19, 1998 on the premises of the permanent exposition The Investment Projects of St. Petersburg. The Fair had been arranged with assistance from the St. Petersburg Economy and Industrial Policy Committee and the St. Petersburg Foundation for Support to Industries.
The Fair was participated in by 17 companies which presented 21 projects requiring a total of over $70 mln. investment. The prizewinners were:

- OAO Izotek
The 1st Fair and Presentation was held at the business center Prin on May 28, 1998.
Of 12 companies which presented their projects in the sphere of small and medium-sized business, two companies found investment.
The Fair aroused great interestedness in the investment projects on the part of the city government, Russian and western companies.
